Fasting and Abstinence
Lenten Fasting and Abstinence
Fasting
Fasting is to be observed on Good Friday by all Catholics in good health between the ages of 18 and 59.
When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.
Abstinence
Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years and older on all Fridays of Lent.
The Law of Abstinence pertains to abstaining from eating meat.
Am I excused from fasting and abstinence?
Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill,
including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes.
Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women.
In light of grave human needs which weigh on the Christian conscience in all seasons, Catholics are urged, particularly during Lent,
to give generously to local, national and world programs of sharing (if your means allow).
